Fractures in teeth Highlands Ranch dentistry

Fractures in teeth are a common finding in many patients. Highlands Ranch dentist Dr. Sarah Parson has a number of ways she can advise you on how to handle these situations. Fractures in teeth can be seen a number of ways each with different status.  Some fractures dooms the tooth to extraction while other are not remarkable.

Simple craze lines in teeth

Craze lines are simple superficial fractures in the enamel of the tooth and the causes of these craze lines in varied.  Something as simple and changing temperature of the foods and beverages we eat and drink each day.  As an example if we eat ice cream followed by hot coffee these extreme changes in temperature can cause the tooth to fractue similar to a crystal glass.

Enamel Fractures in teeth

Enamel fractures can be caused not only from changes in temperature of foods we eat but also from previous filling and clenching and grinding. As an example silver dental fillings can in time expand and fracture the tooth.  It is hoped for all concerned that the fracture only goes to the enamel of the tooth

Complex fractures

Complex fractures can go through the enamel and into the dentin of the tooth. For approximately 90% of these teeth a dental crown is all that is needed.  If howver the fracture goes through the dentin of the tooth to the nerve of the tooth and a root canal may be needed. On occasion, the fracture progresses to the outside of the tooth surface the tooth is doomed to extraction.

Prognosis of Complex Cracks in tooth

The prognosis of cracked teeth will be explained by our Highlands Ranch dentists.  While only a 10% chance that the tooth will be lost it seems like 100% if it is you.  One of the frustrating elements you need to be aware of is that you could go through a crown… followed by a root canal… followed by having the tooth extracted.  No one is happy about this outcome but the good news is it only happend 10% of the time.

Highlands Ranch dentist free whitening offer

Dr. Sarah Parsons office offers free custom fabricated whitening trays.  When new patients come in for their new patient exam, dental x-rays and cleaning we take molds of your teeth.  We then fabricate custom whitening trays from your molds that hold the whitening solution.  The dental whitening solutionsis various concentrations of carbamide peroxide.  Wearing the custom crafted teeth whitening trays is one of the most effective methods used to whiten teeth.  In particular… difficult colored teeth are most effectively whitened using this technique

Difficult teeth to whiten

Our Highlands Ranch dentists feels the basic color or hue of your teeth determines how you teeth will whiten if at all.  As an example teeth stained with tetracycline can be difficult to impossible to completely whiten.  The next most difficult color is teeth with gray hues.  It seems that patients with gray teeth take so much longer to whiten and the outcome is not as remarkable as those patients with yellow hues.

Alternative to teeth whitening

Alternatives to teeth whitening for the most part include either direct or indirect dental veneers. For significant discoloration porcelain type dental veneers are most effective in most cases. The cost of dental veneerscan be substantial running around $1500 each (circa 2011). It certainly does not hurt to try some type or types of dental whitening before considereing dental veneers

Our Highlands Ranch dentists YouTube Video

Highlands Ranch dentists Dr.. Sarah Parsons has uploaded her dental practice video on YouTube.  This video shows some of the services her Highlands Ranch dental office offers.  Dr. Parsons Highlands Ranch dental office will be closed the week between Christmas and New Years.  She will be back into the office on Monday January 3, 2011.

Dental Sealants

Today Dr. Parsons placed  dental sealants on a young child who had deep grooves in his teeth and his brushing and flossing were fair.  Most children do not have the manual dexterity to floss so for the most part parents need to floss for their children. There are two types of cavities that children can get.

  • Brushing cavities
  • Flossing cavities

Brushing cavities occur on the tops of the teeth and the surface that face the cheek and tongue.  Flossing cavities occur between the teeth where the bristles on the toothbrush cannot get to.  This is why flossing is so important.  Our Highlands Ranch dentist was just at the Wallgreen’s across the street and was looking at flossing aids. The flossing aids look like niniture hack-saw where floss is strung between two plastic projections.  The handle makes it easy to get between the teeth.  As we tell our patients you only need to floss the teeth you want to keep.

Halcion Dental Sedation Highlands Ranch

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

The use of Halcion in Dental Sedation

There are many different types of medicine our Highlands Ranch dentists can use to make dental procedures more tolerable for dental phobics.  Most (but not all) patients tolerate this oral pre-medication quite well and find the level of sedation achieved to be adequate or even good.  Of course there are patients whose degree of anxiety is so high that other types of dental sedation need to be considered.  These “other” dental sedation techniques include include  I.V. “moderate dental sedation” or… some type of hospital dentistry. Dr. James DeLapp, Dr Sarah  Parsons and Dr. Sarah Parsons provide ”minimal” dental sedation for their patients in the Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and Greater Denver area. All doctors are members of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.

Why is Halcion a good dental sedation drug

Halcion is a good medicine for treatment of mild dental anxiety.  Halcion is a family member of Valium (a benzodiazepine) and has been used to treat a variety of “other” medical problems.  Halcion has other sedation benefit including varying degree of amnesia about the procedure. What this means is… you “may” forget about parts of the procedure or feel the treatment time was less than it really was. As with any medicine.,.. each patient has a different response to medicines. For some patients the response will be remarkable while for others little change will be evident.

As the year is coming to an end…. our Highlands Ranch dentists recommend that you check to see if you have maximized your dental insurance benefits for 2010.  Most (but not all) insurance companies use the January 1st date to re-establish new benefits for the year.  What this also means is you loose any unused dental insurance benefits from 2010.  Our Highlands Ranch dental office serves patients from the Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Centennial, Parker, Ken Caryl and

Typical unused benefits amounts

If you have only used your dental insurance for an exam… routine cleaning and dental x-rays that can end up with having spent only a little over $300.00. Dental insurance company benefits maximums in a year are usually between $1000.00 and $1500.00 which would leave between $700. and $1200.  Once we get into the new year these unused benefits are forever lost.

Our new dental practice video

With with addition of Highlands Ranch dentist Dr. Sarah Parson….. Dr.’s James and Candace DeLapp had produced a new dental practice video describing their Family dental practice in the Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree areas of Colorado. Technology whether in video or dentistry is continually improving and our knowledge base expands as we speak.  One of our recent Blog articles was on Stem Cells found in teeth  may hold the future of Regenerative Medicine.  Basically the thought is… a stem cell has the genetic information to produce any type of cell in the body.  Research into new disease treatment is expanding. We just do not know where this ultimately will lead medicine.  For most of us “old guys” we do not have any viable stem cells.  For children and young adults thee are possibilities.  Baby teeth with “most” of the root left or in young adults “wisdom teeth” may be a source of stem cells.

Phonetics and Dental Veneers

Phonetics when considering dental Veneers in Highlands Ranch

Dental veneers are usually placed to improve the looks of our Highlands Ranch dental patients smile. The whole idea in a smile make over is to correct minor tooth position… length and color to name a few.  Phonetics is one of several additional element that should be investigated because the dental veneers not only need to look good they need to “sound good”! Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide cosmetic dentistry as well a family dentistry to their patients in the Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Parker, Ken Caryl, Centennial, Littleton and Denver metro area.

The dental veneer mock up

A diagnostic wax-up is fabricated from models of your current teeth. After a complex evaluation… a diagnostic wax-up if fabricated to meet your esthetic concerns.  You have the ability to choose different “styles” of teeth to have fabricated.  These styles differ mostly the the incisal edges of teeth.

The Phoenic Evaluation of the Diagnostic wax-up

If the diagnostic wax -up is esthetically pleasing our Highlands Ranch dentists can proceed to the phonetic evaluation.  This phonetic evaluation consists of evaluation of the “f”…”v”… and “s” sounds. The goal is for the patient to be able to make these sounds comfortably.  There are times in which there is excessive incisal thickness of the upper front teeth that needs to be adjusted.  In addition… occlusal evaluation needs to be evaluated before proceeding to the final dental veneers. In many instances these factors are evaluated and corrected in the dental temporaries.

White Dental Fillings

Replacing old worn out silver dental fillings by our Highlands Ranch Dentists

Old silver dental fillings frequently have decay (cavities) under these old fillings. The combination of silver and mercury are combined together to form this amalgam filling material. In time… these “silver dental fillings” wear and corrode away allowing bacterial to percolate underneath the filling. Highlands Ranch Dentists Dr. James DeLapp andDr. H. Candace DeLapp have many different solutions to this problem.   If left unattended… these cavities under old silver filling could cause substantial additional dental problems.

The most common dental solution for replacing old worn out silver fillings

In most situations you  can replace old worn out dental fillings with a variety of dental materials.  In some instances replacing with amalgam filling material may be in order.  In our practice “most” of our Highlands Ranch Dental patients do not like the looks of the old silver (black) fillingmaterial. Newer more esthetic dental material are available. These materials include but are not limited to:

  • Composite or white dental filling material
  • Bonded porcelain like dental material
  • White all porcelain dental crown
  • Porcelain fused to metal dental crown
  • Gold or similar colored all-metal dental crown

Delta Dental Insurance Highlands Ranch

Highlands Ranch Delta Dental Insurance helps pay for a portion of the cost of dental filling replacement. Deltal Dental and most other dental insurance planspay a portions of the cost of replacement of dental fillings.  In many instance they pay for the cheapest (silver filling) material.  Typically reimbursement run about 50% of the fee but plans vary up and down from this percentage.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening in Highlands Ranch

Teeth whitening is turning out to be a very popular and accepted treatment for many patients.  Over time minerals and stains from food or drink darken or stain teeth. Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide Cosmetic and Family dental services for patients in the Lone Tree and Highlands Ranch areas of Colorado.

Difficult colors to bleach

There are a variety of colors of teeth that are easy to bleach and other colors very difficult.  Colors that are generally considered easy to bleach are yellows.  Most systems respond favorably to most bleaching protocols.  However… gray colors are very difficult to bleach and at times our Highlands Ranch dentist need to combine techniques. Colors that are impossible or very difficult to bleach include colors that are a result from tetracycline staining or fluorosis (too much fluoride in the water).  In these situation bleaching may “mitigate” the very dark color but really does not whiten them. In this situations some type of dental veneers may be needed.  A dental veneer is a small piece of porcelain that is bonded onto the from surface of your tooth.  Even veneers can be difficult to mitigate the underlying color.

Types of teeth bleaching

There are many different types of tooth whitening or teeth bleaching.  All the systems currently available use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as the bleaching agent.  These solutions are delivered to the tooth as one of the following

  • Toothpastes (not very effective)
  • Whitening strips
  • Generic trays
  • Custom Trays
  • One-hour whitening

What is seen in all of these is the lowest concentration is in the tooth pastes and the highest concentration is in the one-hour bleaching systems. What can be “generally” stated is… bleaching is a combination of concentration and time on the tooth.  A higher concentration (one-hour whitening) needs less time than whitening strip (lots of time on tooth).

Combined techniques for tooth whitening

Our Highlands Ranch dentist have found using a combination of techniques can be most effective in whitening your teeth especially hard to whiten colors (grays).  In this scenario we first use one hour teeth whitening and then f9llow up with custom tray whitening. Some of the issues seen is tooth/teeth sensitivity.  Whitening DOES make teeth sensitive to some degree or another.  If you teeth are very sensitive to hot or cold you most likely are “not” a candidate for tooth whitening.
